Karl Ludwig von Bertalanffy, a biologist, is known as a founder of general systems theory. Educated at The Universities of Innsbruck and Vienna, he moved to Chicago on a Rockefeller Fellowship. Wanting to remain in the U.S., he still had to return to Austria in 1938 and joined the Nazi Party, which helped to secure a position as professor at the University of Vienna. He left Austria again in 1948, first working at the University of London (1948-49), the at Canadian universities, before coming to the University of Southern California (1955-58).
